United States Mint 50 State Quarters® Program
Including The District of Columbia and United States Territories
Factoids by Year
See the reverse of the quarters issued in a given year as well as some facts about the coins and the States.
In 1999, the United States Mint started issuing a series of quarter-coins commemorating the 50 States. The reverse (tail side) of each quarter features an engraving that in some way symbolizes some aspect of that State or its history.
Each state quarter is minted in the three separate mints: Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. Coins from Denver and Philadelphia are released for general use; the coins from San Francisco are used in proof sets and collector cases and are rarely found in general use. These quarters are differentiated by the mint mark on the obverse (head side) of the quarter below the words "In God We Trust," which will be a "D" for the Denver Mint, a "P" for the Philadelphia Mint, or a "S" for the San Francisco Mint.

Over the course of 10-year program, a new quarter would be issued approximately every 10 weeks in the order that the states attained statehood; five new states would be issued each year. In addition to the original state coins, Congress has now authorized the U.S. mint to issue a series of coins to commemorate the District of Columbia and and the five United States Territories: the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. These coins will be issued in equal sequential intervals in 2009 in the order listed.
I started collecting the coins from the wild in 1999, intending to collect a quarter from each state from each of the general release Mints.
